Hiring a bad roofing contractor to take the lowest bid can cost you in the end. I will never forget sitting in a 3-day required contractor school to add a line of work to our current business of 20+ years. There were a lot of new individual starting out for their first time. The instructor asked us to introduce ourselves, our goals, and how long we have been in the business. There was a woman sitting next to me, when it was her turn she didn’t understand the assignment and responded “No English”. I thought to myself how is this woman getting a roofing license, why did she choose the English contractor class when they offer Spanish classes? For the next 3 days I witnessed her watching movies in Spanish during our lessons. She didn’t know one thing that was talked about with ethics, compliance, safety, etc. At the end of the 3 days the state requires no test for roofing contractors, she received her certificate and she will be issued the license. To add a General Contractor license to our current roofing, siding and gutters. I was required to take a state exam and pass, and take the required 3 day course. I passed and was issued mine.
When you as a property owner hires someone like this it can turn out to be a nightmare. Over the past 20+ years this has helped keep us in business. We are called in whenever an Issue comes up and they can’t reach the original roofing company. We go fix the mess ups. Most of the time the issue is the installation and it’s obvious the installer has never done it before. We run into issues with cheap products used plastic vs using aluminum. Storm Chasers come into town and knock doors to get you to file an insurance claim for quick cash. They then sub out the work for cheap labor to someone who hasn’t a clue how to install. Another issue we see is the owner was sold one product and another was installed because they are not in the business. Do your research on the company. Check the state DOPL website to see how long they have been in the industry, if there are any complaints, check the BBB for complaints on the company and check on complaints of what’s been open and closed, how many and the history, ask for references of past clients. The companies that are involved with the shady practice have high reviews on google and yelp due to paying for those fake reviews. Protect your property from being the next disaster!
